Fool Me Twice

I consider this episode to be in the okay category. Not great, but certainly not on my worst list.

It opens with a black man running down the street. He crashes into a homeless woman, overturning her shopping cart. Shortly after, he's killed by another black guy with an accent. We find out this involves people from a Caribbean country called St. Germaine. The first man is knifed but not before pulling a pin unknowingly from the killer's lapel.

At the crime scene, Jim is wearing a black, white and grey plaid shirt over a grey t-shirt and dark pants. Blair is wearing jeans and a dark olive green button-up shirt. A witness tells the boys that the man said something before he died: the name Benet, and warns this person not to come to Cascade. Blair knows that it's referring to the peace activist, Genevieve Benet who's coming to Cascade for the Amnesty International conference. They can't ID the body but Jim looks around and spies the lapel pin on the street. The homeless woman from the first scene watches from the crowd.

Then we're treated to a revisit of Uncle Gustavo. I like Gustavo. He's selling two powerful shoulder-launched missiles to some bad guy. In a car across the water, two men are listening in to Gustavo's pitch to the mercenary. The bad guy decides to try the merchandise, aims and blows up the car with the men in it. Gustavo sees what's happening and he takes off, taking the other missile with him. Needless to say, the bad guy isn't happy to be stiffed out of his deal.

Back in Simon's office, we find out that the president of St. Germaine will be attending also, somebody who quite the dictator, Feliz Lemec. Benet comes barging into Simon's office, irritated that she was met at the airport by the police. When shown the picture of the dead guy, she claims not to know him, nor does she recognize the pin. She explains how she gets death threats daily and isn't going to let this stop her from attending the conference.

Blair jumps in and offers to be her tour guide. She accepts, and we see the start of a beautiful friendship. <g> Jim continues the investigation while Blair gets to know Genevieve. He's fascinated with her and she seems to be interested in him. She's young and pretty, btw. I love when she asks Blair what his doctorate is about, and he spins the tail about studying the social structure of an urban police department. Blair and Genevieve don't know they're being followed by one of Lemec's men. We find out Lemec is planning on killing her and surprise, the arms buyer who was stiffed by Gustavo is at Lemec's hotel room. They plan on blowing up the torch being lit as a symbol of peace, and Lemec will take the credit by asking for a stop to world-wide terrorism.

We are treated to Blair coming out of his room first thing in the morning. He looks very nice in jeans and a burgundy shirt. His hair is pulled back but -- warning! -- this is one of the sideburns episodes. They're halfway across his cheek, kind of like a backward letter L. Rather unattractive, I must say. I love how Jim pours Blair coffee. So domestic, these two. Jim is wearing a long-sleeved green and white shirt with black pants. Blair is infatuated with Genevieve. Nice camera for both boys in this scene as they sit at the table and drink coffee, discussing Genevieve. Oh, and Blair is wearing his earrings. After Jim has a momentary olfactory episode, Blair runs off to be with Genevieve. This episode isn't ever explained that I can tell. And it doesn't really have a purpose, other than for Jim to sniff the hallway. Go figure.

We find out that the lapel pin is the insignia of the presidential guard of St. Germaine. Jim is confused because Genevieve claims she'd never seen it before. Simon wants Blair to talk to her about accepting protection, something she's refused so far. I love when Jim is explaining Blair's feelings for Genevieve to Simon. He tells us Blair's not sure whether to worship her or date her. LOL! Jim wants to talk to Lemec, but Simon knows Jim's ah, kid glove manners.

The FBI arrives and IDs the arms dealer and buyer, a mercenary named Janover. So Jim finds out from the feds that Gustavo is involved. He was apparently working for the FBI but now the feds believe Gustavo killed the fed agents who were undercover in that car. He wants Gustavo and the arms buyer fried.

Blair and Genevieve spend another day together. We get to see the new torch and Blair does finally talk to her about her work. Of course, Jim bugs the heck out of Lemec when he questions him. I love Jim being irritating to the bad guys.

Guess who Jim sees out in front of Lemec's hotel? Gustavo. Jim pats him down while Gustavo tries to explain about the missile. I like how Jim smelled Gustavo's alpaca gloves. He actually tells Gustavo this, which is quite funny. Gustavo is confused, but Jim just grins. I don't see how this sensory episode has anything to do with the scent at the loft.

The plot thickens. We find out the first guy killed had an envelope that Lemec wants badly, but his men can't find it. Blair and Genevieve go parking. <g> Jim takes Gustavo home and lets him explain about the sting. Jim finds out that Gustavo has the other missile stashed some place safe. When Jim has to go on a call, I like that he handcuffs Gustavo to the pillar. I'd rather it be Blair he handcuffs... No wait, not canon.

The cops think they have one of the bad guys cornered on the roof of Benet's hotel. It's the guy who killed the courier in the first scene. Rather than be caught, he jumps from the roof, killing himself.

The guys figure out that somebody definitely wants to kill Benet. I like when the three of them talk about the case and Simon asks Blair to talk to Genevieve. They want her to cancel her talk, so he agrees to talk to her. Jim is wearing his black leather jacket, a dark shirt over a white t-shirt and dark pants. Pretty nondescript clothing actually. Blair has on a green shirt over a white t-shirt, a dark jacket and black pants.

The plot thickens when the homeless woman turns out to be a contact for Genevieve, and also the first dead guy is the woman's son. The envelope with information that will prove that Lemec is an evil tyrant is passed over to Genevieve.

Blair goes to Genevieve's hotel and makes a discovery. One of the men tortured and murdered by Lemec was someone important to Genevieve. We aren't told exactly who, but I get the idea that maybe it was a lover. And the idea to show the incriminating evidence in public is to force the US to withdraw its trade agreements with St. Germaine, thereby toppling Lemec's regime through financial means. She convinces Blair to let her do what she needs to do.

Meanwhile, Jim, the fed agent and Gustavo set up a meet with Janover. Janover shows, but surprise! The fed is a traitor! He whacks Jim over the head and turns the gun on Gustavo. Janover takes the last missile and leaves to kill Benet. Jim struggles to his feet, but he falls back over. He makes his way shakily to behind a table where he falls again, grabbing a pair of pliers which he jams into an electrical outlet. Can we say ouch? The lights go out, Jim whacks the fed, and sets Gustavo free. I love that Jim lets Gustavo go, telling him to meet him back here later. Gustavo thanks his friend and takes off.

Jim still has a headache but he manages to tell Simon that the mercenary has the missile and to clear the conference site. There is a large crowd gathered. Lemec needles Benet in public. Blair is standing watching, and he looks none to happy that Lemec is being nasty and that Genevieve is still going to make her speech. She's carrying the envelope. The mercenary is aiming the missile, waiting for the torch to be lit so the missile will follow the heat source.

Our hero, Jim arrives in a helicopter and starts searching for the mercenary. Genevieve makes her speech, revealing the photographs with names and dates of Lemec's atrocities. The missile is fired. Jim sees it and to divert its path, he shoots an oil barge (it says Cyclops, btw) out on the water. The missile hits it and explodes. Jim goes after the mercenary while Lemec confronts Benet about the pictures. He hands her a gun and tells her if he's so evil, why doesn't she just kill him now. Blair talks her out of it very nicely. Good Blair.

Jim catches the bad guy with a little help from Gustavo. Oh, and Jim drops his gun yet again. <sigh> The feds show up and arrest Gustavo. But as in Second Chance, it turns out that the feds are fake. They're Gustavo's men yet again. Then we're treated to the now famous synchronized coffee drinking scene as Jim and Simon watch the news reports of Lemec's downfall. Very cute. Jim is wearing a tannish colored shirt over a white t-shirt. Unfortunately, Jim and Blair aren't together in the tag. Blair bids adieu to Genevieve in a sweet good-bye scene. Blair is wearing a nice royal blue shirt which looks great with his eye color. She does give him a small kiss on the cheek goodbye. And what's with the bye-bye wave from Blair? LOL! He looks about eighteen and very sweet in that last camera shot.
