Red Ice

This is the second Russian-themed episode. It opens with Jim and Blair going to a speech being given by a Novel prize winning poet who happens to be a friend of Micki Kamerev, the woman we met in Red Dust. Blair also is impressed with the man and is anxious to hear him speak. Needless to say, the man is killed by a sniper. Jim is wearing his long, light-brown coat with the leather collar, a dark brown sweater and dark pants. Blair is wearing a burgundy shirt over a white t-shirt, tan khakis and a dark jacket. Blair is confused why Jim didn't hear the gun cock or the round fired.

In Simon's office, they're discussing the case. Blair is wearing a black, grey and white plaid flannel shirt over a white t-shirt and dark pants. Blair's shirt looks like the one from Blind Man's Bluff. Jim is wearing a long-sleeved dark blue shirt over a grey t-shirt and dark pants. Simon isn't too happy for Cascade to be on the front page of every newspaper in the world. And guess who walks in to take over the case? The Feds. Agent Mulroney brought along a Russian police officer, a woman, Katrina Vaslova, and she is assigned to work with our boys.

Turns out the poet was killed by a Russian made rifle. The fur flies when Micki comes to the station with a Russian priest, Father Kasporev. They want to bury Dimitri in a religious ceremony, but Vaslova takes control of the body, irritating our Jimmy. The guys go down to the site of the killing, still trying to figure out why Jim didn't hear the gun discharge. Jim is wearing the same clothes and his brown coat. Blair is also in the same outfit and wearing his black leather jacket. Jim sees a piece of material tied to an overhead wire. They follow several more pieces and half a mile away, Jim finally sees where the bullet came from. He also says only the best could make the shot from that distance.

They find a room completely covered with mattresses, turning it into a giant silencer. They also find the circle of glass cut from the window with two Russian coins placed on it. Jim knows who the sniper is, and they've previously met in Peru. Yuri has 127 confirmed kills, information that Jim's knows. Seems Yuri is now a freelance hit man.

Simon sends Blair and Vaslova to Little Russia to flash Yuri's picture around while Jim goes to speak with Dan about the autopsy. Seems Dan has find something interesting in Dimitri's body -- uncut diamonds worth about two mil. Btw, through the whole episode Vaslova withholds information which she dribbles out in tiny dabs, making Jim and Simon very irritated. And she is darned irritating herself.

The boys are on stake-out to see who bites on the information that Dimitri's body will be shipped home. Blair bugs Jim until he spills the beans about his connection to Yuri. The usual Ellison luck, I'm afraid. Yuri killed a good friend of his, of course and got away, so now they're arch enemies.

Somebody takes the bait and guess who it is? Micki and the good Father. Jim is very disappointed because he thought he and Micki were friends. I love when Simon tells Jim to "get in here" at the warehouse and Blair goes along without even being asked. Blair stays with Jim through thick and thin. Good Blair.

Yuri pops up and sees Ellison. Then he blows away the priest. Jim sees the shooter so he and Simon take off after Yuri, who leaves a little gift behind -- a bomb. I love that Jim covers Simon's body with his when he sees the bond. He's definitely the protective type. When it doesn't explode, he goes over to it and turns it over. The digital readout says "Ellison". Very clever. So now Yuri and Jim know the game is afoot.

We see interesting information on Yuri's computer when he tracks Jim. He even finds his building using satellite imaging. Back at the station, Jim tells Simon that there is no way Vaslova will get info from Micki. When Vaslova gets nowhere, she slaps Micki. Jim pitches a fit. Jim is wearing a dark blue sweater with a snowflake design (I think this is one that Sylvia made for him, btw) over a grey t-shirt, dark pants, and his black leather coat. Blair is wearing a black and tan plaid flannel shirt over a royal blue t-shirt, jeans and his brown leather jacket.

Blair is comparing Jim and Yuri as Sentinels who are having a rivalry. Jim uses his senses while Yuri uses technology in the same manner. Jim isn't buying it until Yuri calls Jim on his cell phone and Jim sees him watching him and Blair. They have a little male pissing contest before Yuri disappears. Don't you love men? I do. LOL!

Vaslova finally admits that the shadow Russian government probably hired Yuri to kill the diamond smugglers because it devalues Russia's few assets, diamonds being one. Micki takes off after she makes bail. Jim and Blair try to talk her into going into protective custody, but she refuses. Suddenly, Micki, Jim and Blair are snatched off the street by none other than the Feds. They're taken to a protected place which isn't protected for long. The Feds put up Micki's bail and are now using her for bait. They're also using Jim to pull Yuri in. They think they have the house completely safe with all sorts of technology, but surprise! Yuri is already outside lurking.

We find out the reason Micki was helping with the smuggling is because they're selling the diamonds and then funnelling the money back into Russia to help the people. Isn't that sweet? <beg>

Anyway, Yuri makes his move after almost all of the Feds pull out. He easily kills the two left behind and pins everybody in the cabin with sniper fire. Jim calls for help, but Mulroney refuses to send in any more men. Jim goes out after Yuri and they have a battle at the same dam where the girl in Blind Man's Bluff killed herself. When Jim manages to overpower Yuri, one of the Fed snipers shoots him, sending him down into the water. Jim is pissed, but the Feds are unrepentant.

The tag is kind of blah, with Vaslova inviting Jim to Russia to eat at Burger King. But Jim and Blair were together through most of the episode, and Jim used his senses a few times, so this one was okay for a fill in episode. I did like when Micki thanks Blair and Jim for saving her life and Blair responds, "That's our job". He doesn't say "that's Jim's job". Blair definitely thinks of himself as a cop.

Next up is Dead Certain.
